Job Title: Regulatory Labeling & Compliance Specialist
Location: Commissary Facility – Ankeny, IA
FLSA: Non-Exempt
General Function:
The regulatory labeling & compliance specialist’s primary responsibility is to ensure food items produced at Hy-Vee food-manufacturing facilities comply with applicable USDA and FDA food labeling regulations.

Accountable and Reports to: Technical Director, Compliance & Food Protection

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Generate, interpret, and evaluate product packaging, nutrition labels, ingredient statements, and allergen statements to ensure compliance with USDA and FDA food regulations.
- Manages regulatory review process for new and reformulated food products and contributes to maintenance of existing products.
- Utilizes Genesis R&D and other nutrition labeling software in maintenance of nutrition and ingredient database.
- Knowledgeable in use of FSIS Label Submission and Approval System (LSAS).
- Independently reviews and substantiates claims and provides regulatory guidance to R&D team to ensure new products meet the needs of desired claims.
- Possesses foundational knowledge of raw materials, ingredient functionality, standard of identity, etc. as they pertain to labeling.
- Keeps up to date with evolving USDA and FDA regulation changes. Utilizes CFR database for verification of USDA and FDA regulations.
- Manages nutrition label program for Produce Commissary (Short Cuts), Bakery Manufacturing, D&D Foods, Bulk Manufacturing, Regional Bakeries, and Hy-Vee Fresh Commissary.
- Creates and maintains label formatting for in-house printed food labels for all manufacturing facilities.
- Works cross functionally with retail labeling staff to ensure all product and recipe analysis meet national, state, and local regulations.
- Works in conjunction with graphics/marketing to review and approve nutrition label content for Hy-Vee Private Labeled food products.
- Works cooperatively with R&D, Marketing, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Food Safety departments to provide packaging and labeling that meets the needs of all business units.
- Trains Nutrition Labeling Specialists on use of internal and external nutrition labeling software, programs, and policies.
- Reports to work when scheduled and on time. Adheres to company policies and departmental guidelines.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required. Provide support and assistance to compliance and food protection staff as needed.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science preferred- Nutrition/Dietetics, Food Science/Food Technology or related
- 2+ years’ experience in food labeling. Experience in food service or food industry.
- Proficient in computer applications, MS Office, Adobe, and nutritional database/software programs.
- Knowledge of FDA and USDA labeling regulations
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to physically perform light work exerting up to 20-pounds of force occasionally.
- Visual requirements include vision from less than 20-inches to more than 20-feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
Working Conditions:
- Duties mostly in an office or lab setting (climate controlled)
- Frequent deadlines exist while handling multiple tasks.
- Daily contact occurs with employees and office personnel.
- Daily contact with Governmental regulatory agencies including USDA and FDA.
