Job Overview

The Senior Compliance Specialist stands at the forefront of Wawanesa’s compliance framework, operating with a high degree of autonomy under the Director of Compliance. As a seasoned expert in compliance matters, this role is pivotal in steering, enlightening, and advising the business teams engaged in frontline compliance operations. 

 

In this role, you will craft and deploy sophisticated compliance program processes, procedures, and tools, thereby elevating and refining the organization’s compliance stature. You will work with the Compliance team to propel group and enterprise-wide goals, offering seasoned advice and support to Compliance Specialists.
 
Job Responsibilities

  • Risk Mitigation Advisory: Offer strategic counsel to the business on crafting and executing compliance processes, procedures, and tools to proactively diminish compliance risks.
  • Diligently reviews and interprets laws, regulations, and industry best practices, translating them into actionable insights for the business.
  • Specialist Support: Provide expert guidance, advice, and backing to first-line Compliance teams, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and compliance excellence.
  • Assessment Leadership: Take charge of control effectiveness self-assessments within the business, ensuring diligent follow-up on management action plan items for comprehensive risk management.
  • Compliance Reporting: Collaborate with the Director of Compliance to generate regular, insightful reports detailing compliance events, activities, and the overall status of compliance programs for leadership review.
  • Learning and Development: Pinpoint and create learning opportunities, coordinate the development of training materials, and conduct training sessions on regulatory changes or updates that necessitate compliance supervision.
  • Relationship Management: Strengthen business relationships by connecting with peers and leaders, particularly those engaged in primary compliance activities.
  • Compliance Innovation: Under the guidance of the Director of Compliance, work alongside the Risk, Legal, and Compliance group and business stakeholders to foster the development and refinement of compliance practices and processes.
  • Project Coordination: Manage and implement projects delegated by the Director of Compliance and the Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer, aligning with strategic compliance objectives.
  • Versatile Role Fulfillment: Execute additional responsibilities as needed, demonstrating flexibility and strategic alignment with the business’s compliance goals.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years’ prior experience in a compliance setting, preferably working for a federally regulated financial institution.
  • Post-secondary education with a focus on legal, business or accounting matters (or equivalencies) required.  Completion of a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree an asset
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry experience an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with GRC tools (such as Ethidex, Archer, Resolver)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct detailed analysis of information, and to select and implement best solutions in a timely manner.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience and present information or arguments in a convincing manner.
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills, with the ability to develop and prioritize effective plans that define activities, resources and timelines.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to influence key relationships.
