This position will be located either in New York or Chicago and work a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week in the office. 

The Insurance Risk Manager will be responsible for monitoring and assessing insurance risks within the Argo Group

The role will quickly take ownership of the Insurance Risk and Control Framework, working with underwriting and actuarial teams to continually enhance the underwriting and reserving process and acting as a second line of defense on Insurance Risk topics. This is a fantastic role which will give you the opportunity to build an excellent internal network and work with senior stakeholders across various lines and functions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify, assess, manage, monitor and report all insurance risks, gross and net of reinsurance, material to Argo.
  • Designing and maintaining appropriate key risk indicators (KRIs) and RAG trigger limits to monitor trends in risk exposures.
  • Provide input into the Insurance risk appetite and monitor risk profile to address timely potential breaches.
  • Provide challenges and questioning on the management of Insurance risks. This includes providing input into the annual ORSA, business plan risk review, and updating of business plan risk watch list.
  • Work closely with the Economic Capital Modelling team; in particular, insurance risk calibration and outputs.
  • Assist in the maintenance of effective systems and controls regarding exposure to aggregations of insurance risk.
  • Work with Actuarial, establishing regular reviews of the pricing and reserving processes, as well as identifying key drivers of risks and trends.
  • Raise the profile of risk management and work with the business to support understanding.
  • Design, socialization and development of Risk management information (MI) that facilitates visibility and oversight of current risk issues, as well as forward looking and trigger-based MI.

Skills/Competencies

  • Experience of managing cross product line risk aggregation or quantitative portfolio analysis experience.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to facilitate discussions and assessments at varied levels of the organization.
  • Strong working knowledge and familiarity of the General insurance industry with an understanding of Insurance Risk.

Qualifications

  • Excellent academic qualifications including a university degree.
  • Insurance/ Risk qualifications are desirable.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Experience of working within underwriting, pricing or portfolio management.
  • Alternatively, experience working in an assurance role with a deep technical understanding of underwriting risk.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of operating risk management frameworks.
  • Strong numeracy, report writing and presentation skills.
  • Working in a multi-national (re)insurer and delivering the associated regulatory obligations.
  • Good understanding of underwriting, ceded reinsurance, actuarial and risk management functions.
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders internationally and across the full spectrum of hierarchy.
