Job Description:

This posting will fill a position in the Health Science Center. Biological safety expertise in addition to chemical safety knowledge is required.

Assist the Associate Dean of Research and EH&S Associate Directors to develop and implement policies and procedures that align with EH&S and contribute to the safe operation of research within the college; establish the lab safety governance structure withing their respective units; communicate with faculty, staff and students related to the objective of improving laboratory and research safety; maintain and support the unit-level safety committee; and conduct safety training in conjunction with EH&S.

Annual safety survey monitoring and follow up. Follow on the closure of high-risk corrective actions and repeat findings to ensure issues are addressed promptly within their respective units. Escalate unresolved issues to the EH&S Main Office and the College leadership as needed. May conduct safety surveys to assist the EH&S Main Office as needed. Communicate consistently with all relevant stakeholders and provide metrics and reports that include measurements of indicators used to assess safety performance.

Track and assist in implementing procedures to accurately maintain the inventory of chemicals within their respective units. Assist in implementing a process for periodic follow-up of the status of completion of required training for all staff and PIs.

Monitors and tracks laboratory moves and closeouts within the unit. Conducts closeout safety surveys. Collect and input laboratory information (e.g. fume hood inventory, safety equipment, etc.) with existing on-campus space and asset management systems as well as populating new systems as needed.

Assists with research-related incident investigations.

Drives a state vehicle that requires a valid driver license.

A criminal background and post offer health assessment will be conducted.

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Expected to respond to laboratory safety-related emergencies, including at times outside normal business hours.

Commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and three years experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and five years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education & Training: Advanced degree in STEM or appropriate experience and certification.

Experience:  experience in laboratory safety, Biosafety, Industrial Hygiene, or management including design and implementation of safety programs.

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of safety compliance, best practices, and applicable regulations.
